7:19 am - And in the department of "gratuitous and senseless changes"....
|
The sixth Harry Potter movie is reportedly to begin with the Millenium Bridge collapsing in a Death Eater attack.
Just one tiny little problem: the book takes place in 1996-1997. The bridge wasn't begun until 1998 and wasn't completed until 2000. I'm sure they'll call it something else, but anyone who knows London will recognize the bridge instantly, and a lot of them will wonder just what is going on.

7:48 am - Question that has been bothering me for quite some time
|
It strikes me as rather odd that JK Rowling's web site frequently wishes a happy birthday to characters that are dead. So far she's honored *both* Weasley twins (dead and alive), Snape, Lupin, and now Dobby the elf.
Am I the only one who finds this uncomfortably close to those "wishing you a happy birthday in Heaven" advertisements honoring loved ones who've died thanks to disease, car accidents, gang shootings, etc? It's her web site and she can do as she pleases, but wishing a happy birthday to someone who is dead creeps me out a bit.....

10:43 pm - Seven interests meme
|
blpaintchart asked me to explain seven user interests, so here we go...
1. The Middle Ages - I have been enamored of the Middle Ages since my mother, wishing to broaden my cultural experience, gave me a copy of Ivanhoe when I was ten or eleven. I read it, loved it, and proceeded to major in medieval English literature and history in college. Now I'm in a medieval recreation group and one of the top five people in the world on medieval quilting, and that and a dollar will get me a cruller at Dunkin' Donuts.
Also, I think JRR Tolkien had something to do with it,
2. The SCA - The Society for Creative Anachronism is the world's largest medieval and Renaissance re-enactment/recreation organization. We're devoted to "the Middle Ages as they should have been," without the Black Death, pogroms, crusades, plagues, rats, poor sanitation, etc. Although most of us are in it because it's a lot of fun, a surprising number of SCAdians are experts on various subjects ranging from textiles to literature to armory.
I've been involved for nearly twenty years, and am currently the Minister for Arts and Sciences of my beloved home group, the Barony of Bergental (western Massachusetts). I am a proud member of the Order of the Laurel, the Society-wide peerage for excellence in the arts, and hold the equivalent of a knighthood for my work researching and recreating pre-1600 European quilts.
Again, that and a dollar....
3. Quilts - my obsession since I was a senior in college. I LOVE LOVE LOVE quilts, whether 14th century Italian trapunto work, 19th century American calico, or the Exploding Star I pieced and have yet to quilt. Quilts are beautiful, practical, and have a long, rich history going back around 2,000 years. I've already made provisions in my will for my research to be donated to my alma mater when I go to the Giant Fabric and Batting Store in the Sky.
4. Travel - I love to see new places, especially places where Something Happened. See America (and Europe!) first, and all that. There's nothing quite like *being* in a famous place to give a sense of who lived there and when and why.
5. Nero Wolfe - the greatest armchair detective in literary history, Nero Wolfe and his legman/amanuensis Archie Goodwin are the main characters in Rex Stout's brilliant mystery series. The books are wonderfully written, frequently hilarious, and surprisingly risque. They also contain one of the very best portraits of mid-century New York, period.
6. Acoustic Neuroma - the bane of my existence. An acoustic neuroma, also known as a vestibular schwannoma, is a benign tumor on the balance nerve in the ear. Its most usual manifestation is hearing loss, while larger ones can cause facial paralysis, vertigo, and even death if they press on the brainstem. About half of them reach a certain size and never get any bigger, while the rest grow at the rate of about 2 mm per year. The ones that grow must eventually come out, while the stable ones can stay where they are as long as they're monitored via a yearly MRI.
I have a smallish one (about the size of a chickpea) in my right ear. So far it hasn't grown, and that's fine with me. Removing it would cause me to go permanently deaf in my right ear. As long as it doesn't get any bigger than it, it can stay where it is, as annoying as the tinnitus can be.
7. Slash - this will sound very odd, but originally I thought slash was ridiculous. That was back when I was a teenage Star Trek fan who thought the mere idea of Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock engaging in pon farr together was the dumbest thing I'd ever seen in my life (look at all of Kirk's girlfriends! And non-reproductive sex is illogical, so clearly Vulcans can't be gay!).
Of course, what it really meant was that I was a naive, unconsciously homophobic little twit from the Midwest who had no idea what I was talking about (even though I still think Kirk was pretty straight. Spock, OTOH....). I was introduced to Harry Potter slash by a friend, really liked it, and, well...

Now that I'm awake, fed, and relatively coherent, here's my take on Kalamazoo. Note that certain incidents prove that yes, my life is far closer to an episode of I Love Lucy than I'd ever realized:

All in all, a good if exhausting time despite the travel difficulties. I think I'll do it again next year....

I haven't read Michael Chabon's The Yiddish Policemen's Union yet, but this quote from the Wikipedia entry is the sign of a true artist. Emphasis is mine:
"In 2004, Chabon said the (retitled) book would be published in fall 2005, but then the writer decided to trash his most recent draft and start over. His publisher HarperCollins pushed the publication date back to April 11, 2006. Chabon's rejected 600-page draft featured the same characters as the novel he eventually published but "a completely different story," and was also written in the first person.
In December 2005, Chabon announced a second delay to the novel's release, claiming that the manuscript was complete but that he felt that HarperCollins was rushing the novel into publication."
For those who don't know, Chabon wrote the astonishing Pulitzer Prize winning The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, about two comic book writers loosely based on Siegel and Shuster, the creators of Superman. The book is wonderfully written, and clearly shows that Chabon knows and loves genre fiction with all his heart. The Yiddish Policeman's Union is pure alternate history as well as an homage to classic hard boiled mysteries. That he has enough pride in craft, and enough clout to delay publication of what promised to be an automatic best seller, speaks volumes about the man.
It also shows that yes, there are indeed authors who are willing to rewrite their books to make sense instead of shipping unedited first drafts to the publisher or relying on scriptwriters to correct the flaws of their books in the movie version.

7:00 am - Hm.
|
Turns out that Fleur Delacour will not appear in the HBP movie, which means that she probably won't be in the final movie either. Wanna bet that they cut the entire subplot with Bill so they can play up the gag-inducing out of character "romance" between Lupin and Tonks?
I am so not going to either of the last two movies if they do that. That subplot made no sense when I read it, and it still doesn't. *blech*
In other news, my temporary crown broke last night while I was asleep. I am currently waiting for my dentist to open up to see what can done....

1:18 am - And Rowling shows once again that she can't keep her stories straight.
|
Remember how she always said that two characters who were supposed to live died? And that those turned out to be Lupin and Tonks, who "had to die" to "balance things" when Arthur Weasley was reprieved in Book Five? ( Well, it looks like she lied. Again. )
So, dear f-list: is JK Rowling simply incapable of keeping her facts straight, or was she lying all along? Because if it's the former, she's a lousy writer, and if it's the latter, she's a lousy human being. And I'd frankly rather that she be the former.

9:12 pm - 10 ways to know you're reading one of my fics
|
1. Remus wears reading glasses.
2. There is usually a child involved, either via adoption or Severus taking a conception potion.
3. They both tend to become incoherent during sex.
4. Remus' mother lives in America and is an aging hippie.
5. Severus is half-Jewish.
6. Severus is sarcastic and tends to quote great literature.
7. Poppy Pomfrey and Minerva McGonagall are supporting characters.
8. Hermione married or is involved with Neville.
9. Stories often end with them falling asleep entwined.
10. My titles suck.

I just spent several very pleasant hours watching the Doctor Who marathon on BBC America. Can anyone recommend some fic for me? No Mary Sues, and I like decent plot and action/adventure.
Thanks in advance!
