I was high bidder on two auctions (for fics by celandineb and mnemosyne_1, and have accordingly made a $200 donation to Mass Equality, the Massachusetts organization that works to preserve equal marriage here in the Bay State.
I did in honor of an anonymous woman who killed herself in the 1950s. She was a good friend of my aunt's who evidently fell in love with Betty and told her of her feelings, and Betty (a lifelong homophobe) reacted so violently that the woman committed suicide. $200 isn't much, especially when measured against a human life cut short. But it's the only way I can think of to balance the scales, since I'm the last person left who knows the story.
So - may my donation help preserve marriage equality in Massachusetts, and extend it to out of staters (they're working to repeal a 1913 law that prevents non-residents from marrying here should gay marriage not be legal in their home states). There has been enough tragedy.
UPDATE: The Massachusetts Senate voted to repeal the 1913 law today. It now goes to the House. Governor Deval Patrick has already said he will sign the repeal legislation when it comes to his desk.
